Cassandra Lindele Thammiah
May 1, 1950 - May 13, 2015
Cassandra emigrated from Durban, South Africa to Toronto, Canada in 1970. Here she found a beautiful new country in which to raise her two young sons and run a successful small business. While many of her new friends formed an extended Canadian family, Cassandra always maintained a strong connection with her family and friends 'back home' through frequent visits across the ocean.
Many kind people along the way were instrumental in helping Cassandra and her family adapt to the new culture, geography and climate of Canada. In turn, she sought out young families that were new to Canada and helped them start their journey.
Cassandra's family and friends were immensely supportive during her entire life and the source of so much joy and wonderful shared experiences. Her gregarious spirit and unlimited generosity will live forever in the many friendships that she cultivated during her lifetime.
Cassandra passed away peacefully, surrounded by all of her family, on May 13, 2015 in Toronto, following a short illness. Daughter of the late Stephen and Marjorie Thammiah, Cassandra will always be remembered by her life partner, Vernon Bruce, her beloved sons, Vernon Naidoo (partner Shawn Fremeth) and Erwyn Naidoo, and her loving siblings, Shirley, Val, Denny, Dawn and Alan. The family is grateful to the doctors, nurses and staff at Sunnybrook and Bridgepoint Hospitals for their compassion, care and support.
Visitation will be Tuesday, May 19, from 7-9 PM at McEachnie Funeral Home, 28 Old Kingston Rd., Ajax.
Funeral services will be held Wednesday, May 20, at 11 AM at St. Paul's-on-the-Hill Anglican Church, 882 Kingston Rd., Pickering.
Interment to follow at Erskine Cemetery, 1066 Dunbarton Rd., Pickering with a reception afterwards at the family home in Pickering.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to either the Brain Tumour Foundation of Canada, COSTI Immigrant Services or Sunnybrook Hospital in Cassandra's name.
